The Tax Assessor-Collector's office provides vehicle registration and title transaction services for Taylor County residents as an agent for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Temporary permits, disabled parking permits, and specialty plates are also issued in our office. Additionally, TABC permit and amusement machine permit fees are also collected in our office.
Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.
For Public Safety:
We will be serving 65 years of age, or those with underlying health conditions, or low immune systems in efforts to keep our public safe, between 8 a.m.- 9 a.m. each morning.
The Office will close each day from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. to sanitize the office for the next business day.
We encourage the public to wear a mask and practice social distancing when visiting our facilities to ensure everyone's safety.
You can mail registration renewals to:
Taylor County Dept. of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 3762
Abilene, TX 79604
We are located at 400 Oak St in the Taylor County Plaza building.
Our office accepts cash, checks, debit, and credit cards for payments. Please note that checks are not accepted for applications for title only(without registration) and temporary permits.
There is a convenience fee assessed if you choose to use a debit or credit card for payment. Debit cards charge $2.50, and credit cards charge a percentage, up to $5. Please note that this convenience fee is charged by the third party vendor who processes credit and debit card transactions. The current vendor charges the lowest fees available at this time. Taylor County does not retain any part of the fee. Government agencies cannot discount taxes to absorb the convenience fees. We continue to advocate for the lowest fees possible, however this is the only way we are able to offer the option of debit and credit card payments to the public.

DUE TO COVID-19, GOVERNOR ABBOTT ISSUED A PROCLAMATION, declaring a state of disaster for all counties in Texas due to the threat of COVID-19 on March 13, 2020. Governor Abbott issued a statement on March 16, 2020, granting a temporary extension to obtain initial registration, renewal of registration, vehicle titling, and renewal of a permanent disabled parking placard. Governor Abbott also granted a temporary extension for an individual with an expired 30-day temporary permit to obtain another permit or Texas registration.
The temporary waiver applies to vehicle owners in all Texas counties as set forth in the above-referenced proclamation and statement. This temporary waiver is in effect until 60 days after TxDVM notifies the public that normal vehicle registration, vehicle titling, and related services have resumed. The 60-day period will be the same for all counties.
The purpose of the waiver is to prevent customers from having to physically visit a county tax assessor-collector office to obtain initial registration, to obtain a 30-day temporary permit, to transfer a title; or to renew registration or a permanent disabled parking placard. Customers may continue to fill online registration sticker requests and process all other online services.
TxDMV has informed law enforcement agencies and the offices of the county tax assessor-collectors of the temporary waiver.
